New Players
Beginners Guide to NorthCoast NERO
Congratulations! You’ve decided to play at Northcoast NERO! Please note that your first game is FREE. We do not charge you to play your first game because we want to make sure this is something you will enjoy doing.
STEP ONE:
The first step is to find out when our next game is going to be. We play at camps in northern Ohio and players come as far away as Pennsylvania, Virginia, Michigan, Las Vegas and New Hampshire. To find out where our next game will be played, look at our EVENTS PAGE.
STEP TWO:
Contact us to find out more information about the game. We can be reached at info@northcoastnero.com. Our owners will be happy to answer any questions you or your parents may have about the game. If you don’t want to come alone – bring a friend! The more the merrier and you are guaranteed to have a good time fighting alongside of people you know! If you know someone in NERO, you can also come along with them so they can show you the ropes.
STEP THREE:
Building a Character
This is where the fun begins within the NERO game. You can choose the type of character that you will be. Will you be good or evil? Will you be a warrior, a spell casting Scholar, or a sneaky Rogue? Are you Human or will you belong to the races of Elves, Dwarves, or part-Man/part-Animal? What skills will you have? Come up with a character concept and then build your first character. All of these things can be decided by clicking here to make your first character.
STEP FOUR:
Armor, Weapons and Spells
Is there a chance you don’t have a suit of plate mail and a two-handed battle axe laying around your house? You can make your own weapons and armor (directions can be found in the rulebook), or we can supply you with the components to create the equipment your character will need to survive their first game.
STEP FIVE:
Costuming
Every person who plays at NorthCoast NERO is required to be in period dress. This means, no jeans, no t-shirts with writing, no tennis shoes. We spend a lot of time creating a fantasy setting and we want everyone to look the part. This doesn’t mean that you have to show up for your first game in a wizard’s robe or embroidered tunic – you can if you want. What we ask is that you wear, at the very least, non-descript clothing, a belt and some boots. This will set you towards playing the role of a fantasy character. We have extra tunics if you need one. Feel free to dress up like your character, though!
STEP SIX:
Other Equipment
The character section will help identify some of the specifics you will need to act the part of your hero, but there are other things that you will need to make your weekend enjoyable. Here is a brief list of the items you might find necessary:
Sleeping Gear – We are sort of roughing it. It gets cold, even though we have heated sleeping areas. You might want to consider a sleeping bag or bed roll and pillow.
Appropriate Clothing – NERO is primarily played outside. This is during the summer, as well as the colder months. Dress appropriately! Wear layers of clothing in the cold. Wear light, breathable clothing in the summer.
Toiletries – Even the nastiest goblin won’t want to be near you if you stink, so bring a towel, some soap, a toothbrush and what you need for personal hygiene. All people play NERO and you don’t want to be known as the “stinky kid”.
Food or Tavern Money – All of our events have a full service tavern where we serve hot food for the weekend. The meals are incredibly cheap (around $3-$5 per meal) and we make sure that your mom won’t be upset because you spent a weekend living on beef jerky and Gatorade.[lg_gallery][lg_gallery][lg_gallery]
